Farmers are always complaining about how busy they are! Burning
the candle at both ends, up with the cockerel, to bed with the revellers. I used
to believe them but on a quick jaunt across Prague today, passed, walked
through or browsed at least 3 farmer's markets. Where do they get the time to
bring their produce to market and sell it if they are so busy? And who knew
they also farmed wooden spoons, Italian gnocchi, candles and Indian spices. Anyway three
places where I could buy bio products direct from the producer, you'd think
would be a good thing wouldn’t you? You know cutting out the fat cat middle man, from producer
to consumer without a Tesco or a Lidl getting a huge cut, it sounds perfect. So what's my
beef? What's my problem? Well the farmer's markets have become generic, they
all look the same and sell the same things, seemingly from the same producers.
It's almost like shopping in, dare I say it, Tesco. An expensive Tesco at that.
So the revolutionaries have
become the rulers, that the farmers have learnt to stand on two legs and now chant
stack them high, sell them low, yet we the consumers are still bleating about
how great they are.
